The Oregon State Rock: Thunderegg

In 1965, the Oregon state legislature named "The Thunderegg" as its state rock. Oregon rockhounds had voted it as their number-one choice. Thundereggs can be found from less than one inch in diameter to over four feet in diameter. Thundereggs look like plain and "ugly" round rocks until you cut them through the center.

Once opened they reveal an exquisite world of design and color. Polished, they become even more beautiful.

Oregon Thundereggs are found mostly in Malheur, Wasco, Jefferson, Wheeler and Crook counties.
